What causes scaling?

Southern Alberta "enjoys" some of the hardest water in Canada, which means our water-using appliances are all subject to scaling problems.

The dissolved calcium and magnesium solids in hard water plate themselves onto every metal surface at heat-exchange points — in boilers, hot water tanks, heat-exchangers and your tea kettle.

How does scaling affect equipment and costs?

Scale is an effective insulator. As little as 1/16" (1.5 mm) of scale on heat exchanger surfaces (the fire tubes in your hot water tank, for example) can increase energy usage. The thicker the scale is, the more it costs you:

• 1/16" (1.5 mm): +10% energy usage

• 1/8" (3.0 mm): +25% energy usage

• 1/4" (6.0 mm): +40% energy usage
